About

My name is Chris Ross, I am 21 years old and from Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada.

I was a top 6 finalist on The Score’s Gillette Drafted, which is a competition to find Canada’s next great sportscaster. You can check out my demo reel by clicking here!

I am currently in my first year in the faculty of Law at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Sports have been a passion of mine throughout my entire life. I can still remember waking up early in the morning when I was 5 years old to watch the previous night’s highlights that my Dad had taped for me. Through my blog, I hope you can feel that very same passion in my writing. If you don’t have such a great love for sports, it would love to get you on your way to developing a similar passion for sports. Because, sports, they’re awesome.

My favourite teams include the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Raptors, Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners, Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints and the Steve Nash Lakers.

Enjoy!

    Hi Chris,

thanks for your comment the other day regarding the US Open post. I have taken a look at your blog and like what you do! Posts are interesting and information is accurate and easy to read! I see you are fairly new to blogging, same here. I find that reading other peoples work is a great way to pick up tips on writing styles and ways in which to describe something to an audience that is extremely broad.

Keep writing and keep reading. I will be checking your blog regularly for some more sport updates!

    Thanks again,

    Andy

You have a great blog! Seriously, at 19 years old, you should look at pursuing some sort of writing career. You write very well and have great thought provoking entries.

  4. Hey Chris,
Wow! Love the setup. Seriously, I agree with the recent comment about you looking into a writing career. Great, great writing. Your writing is 100 times better than mine, and I can tell you have a ton of readers judging from the comments. Keep going, and Thanks for looking at my blog! Good luck!

  5. Jordan Press says:

Really well organized, well put-together blog, Chris. You’ve got a keen eye for sports and assessing a situation. Keep it up and, to echo other comments, do look into a career in sports reporting.
    Cheers.

    Hi,

I think at 19 you need to experience sports a bit more to be qualified to speak legitimately about anyone: especially Jay Cutler. I am a Broncos fan since birth and Jay is as tough as they come and also was a Pro Bowler in his first full year. If it wasn’t for that clown McDaniels that Pat in a weak moment hired, he would still be our guy. Jay Cutler has a rocket arm and release and has talent in my view. Remember that you are only 19 and need to get some seasoning under your belt before you speak… On the up side you do have a talent for writing, but intuition and experience in all aspects of sports: not so much

I was just checking out the about me and stumbled over this gem of a comment!

Jay Cutler a good QB? Please. The dude has done nothing but flop in the NFL. He collapses under pressure, and he whines about his teammates.

Before you start criticizing someone else’s blog, take a look at what you are saying.

  8. Georgiann I have to respectably disagree. I don’t think age is a factor, I read every post by Chris, and if it doesn’t say on the about page, I could have believed that this was by a writer from ESPN or another major sports company. Chris’ talent is undeniable, and anyone to question his credability should read all of his posts first.

This is Sam from Sam’s Sports Brief on sambrief.com, I just put your blog, Painting the Black on my “Other great blogs” page on my blog.

    Yours is great!

  15. Hi Chris,

Thanks for the comment on my blog in regard to the MLB “SpyGate” controversy. I have read a bit of your work and quite enjoyed it. I remain fascinated by the fact that regular folks with full time jobs/school seem to know more than the people that get paid to talk about sports….thus my focus on thestupidthingstheysaidtoday as opposed to the actual sports story.

I have subscribed to your blog, I look forward to reading!

    Hi Chris,

I was wondering, how do I get my blog, Sam’s Sports Brief (sambrief.com), on the Sports Blog Movement?

Yay Vancouver… definitely where I hope to live someday.

Anyways, I was an English major too, obviously with a passion for sports. After I graduated I had no idea what to do with my degree so I actually am currently pursuing my masters in Sports Journalism, let me tell you best move I’ve ever made.

I hate to sound like I’m campaigning {though I am…} but if you really want to further your education and dive further into sports journalism you should check out the sports journalism masters program at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in Indianapolis, IN {the ONLY masters sports journalism program in the country!!} I’m working on my degree currently and I LOVE it :)

    Keep on writing! Good stuff!

  20. Hey man, this is a really good blog. You seem to have a good grasp on all the sports you write about, and you obviously know a lot about them. This is one of the more interesting/enjoyable blogs to read that I have seen.

  21. Hey i’ll back you up if you want to be an announcer like me!!

  22. Hey Chris maybe you can help me get more followers and bring some of your friends on to my blog and I’ll comment and like your posts.

  23. Chris I have a question for you. Do any of the coach’s that coach for the Dallas Cowboys when Jerry Jones is owning the team have job security?

  24. Rob Causs says:

I followed you on theScores Drafted. You were, by far, my favourite. From what was aired, it was clear that you should of at least come second. Your knowledge and reporting skills were far greater than many of the contestants there. It seemed like all the other contestants and even the judges themselves saw the potential in you. I don’t understand why you did not win. It was probably an age thing.

Regardless, it lead me to this blog which I have been reading ever since. Your insight is incredibly deep for someone your age and I enjoy each and every article (although I do not always agree with your point of view). Finally decided to leave a comment and let you know.

I look forward to seeing where you end up. Keep up the good work.

    • Chris Ross says:

Thank you so much for your comment Rob. Can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. I wish I had the time to write more because I love doing it. Again, thanks for taking the time out to write this comment.

p.s. I agree with you about Drafted.

  25. Hi Chris,

Thank You for following my Blog, MUCH Appreciated. :).

I am now Following your Blog back. :).

    Best Wishes. :)

  26. Hey Chris, this is going to sound strange, but a very long time ago you were the only person who commented on one of my older blogs. I just wanted to say I’ve read a bunch of your stuff over the past couple of years and I’m pretty sure we mutually follow each other on twitter. If you had a second I was wondering if you’d be willing to take a look at my newest blog whatwereabout.me.

I’m doing the best I can but any feedback would be much appreciated from someone who is a little ahed of the point where I’m at. You could DM me on twitter if that’s easiest.

    Thanks so much.
